Conditional Forms

The conditionals are formed by adding to the future root and has two tenses:

1) The Present Conditional (or Simple Conditional) is used:

  • to express yourself politely

Vorremmo parlare con il direttore di quest’albergo. (We would like to talk to the director of this hotel.)
Per favore, potresti chiudere la finestra? (Could you close the window, please?)

  • to express the possibility of carrying out an action

Manuela, potresti accompagnarmi dal dottore? (Manuel, could you take me to the doctor’s, please?)
Stasera andrei volentieri al cinema. (I’d love to go to the cinema this evening.)

  • to express a doubt

In quel caso non so se accetterei la tua proposta. (In that case I don’t know whether I can accept your proposal.)
Che cosa vorresti dire? (What would you like to say?)

  • to express a wish

Mi piacerebbe mangiare del sushi questa sera a cena. (I’d like to eat sushi for dinner this evening.)
Vorrei andare in Argentina quest’anno. (I’d like to go to Argentina this year.)

2) The Past Conditional is used:

  • to express an action that can no longer be changed.

Non sarei dovuto/a uscire con te. (I shouldn’t have gone out with you.)
Saremmo andati al mare se non avesse piovuto. (We would have gone to the beach if it hadn’t rained.)

  • to express a future action in the past.

Il professore ha detto che sarebbe passato verso le dieci. (The professor said he would have come at around 10 o’clock.)
Che altro avremmo potuto fare? (What else could we have done?)
