{"id":9165,"date":"2022-07-15T13:04:42","date_gmt":"2022-07-15T11:04:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/oneworlditaliano.com\/?p=9165"},"modified":"2023-09-21T16:08:03","modified_gmt":"2023-09-21T14:08:03","slug":"passato-prossimo","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/oneworlditaliano.com\/en\/italian-grammar\/grammar-reference\/passato-prossimo\/","title":{"rendered":"Italian Passato Prossimo Tense"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The passato prossimo tense is used in the following situations:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>an action which took place a short time ago.<\/li>\n<li>an action which took place some time ago and the results of the action can still be felt in the present<\/li>\n<li>an experience in your life<\/li>\n<li>an action which has finished but the time period (e.g. this year , this week, today) hasn&#8217;t finished yet<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The passato prossimo is formed in the following way:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"text-align: center;\">the <\/span><strong style=\"text-align: center;\">present<\/strong><span style=\"text-align: center;\"> of the verbs <\/span><strong style=\"text-align: center;\">essere\u00a0<\/strong><span style=\"text-align: center;\">or <\/span><strong style=\"text-align: center;\">avere<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #cc0000;\"><strong style=\"text-align: center;\">+<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>past participle<\/strong> of the principle verb<\/p>\n<p>Examples:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Dopo pranzo Marco <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">ha letto<\/span> il giornale. (The action took place a short time ago)<br \/>\n<em>Marco read the newspaper after lunch.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p>Quest&#8217;anno <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">siamo andati<\/span> in vacanza a Barcellona. (This year is still continuing)<br \/>\n<em>We have been to Barcelona this year.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Hai studiato<\/span> all&#8217;estero? (An experience in your life)<br \/>\n<em>Have you studied abroad?<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Sono stata<\/span> a Parigi due anni fa. (An experience in your life)<br \/>\n<em>I went to Paris two years ago.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p>Oggi, Luigi e Simona <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">hanno fatto<\/span> la spesa. (Today hasn&#8217;t finished yet)<br \/>\n<em>Luigi and Simona have been shopping today.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Sono uscita<\/span> da scuola mezz&#8217;ora fa. (The action took place a short time ago)<br \/>\n<em>I left school half an hour ago.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Sono sposato<\/span> da 14 anni. (They are still married so the results of the action are still felt in the present)<br \/>\n<em> I&#8217;ve been married for 14 years.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>N.B<\/strong> Most verbs use the verb avere as the auxiliary verb, but for verbs of movement essere is used.<\/p>\n<h3>The passato prossimo tense of the verbs mangi<span class=\"style93\">are<\/span>, cred<span class=\"style93\">ere<\/span>\u00a0and part<span class=\"style93\">ire<\/span>:<\/h3>\n<table border=\"1\" width=\"100%\" cellspacing=\"0\" cellpadding=\"2\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"text-align: left;
