Manuela<\/strong>: Meno male, abbiamo fatto in tempo ad arrivare alla stazione!
\nGiorgia<\/strong>: Speriamo che il treno parta in orario\u2026
\nVeronica<\/strong>: Gi\u00e0, io non vedo l’ora di essere a Firenze! Si dice sia una delle citt\u00e0 pi\u00f9 belle d’Italia.

2)\u00a0The Present Subjunctive<\/h3>\n

The present subjunctive (congiuntivo) is used when we there is uncertainty or doubt or when we express an opinion. We are not talking about definite facts.<\/p>\n

Examples:<\/p>\n

Spero che il treno\u00a0parta<\/span> in orario.
\n(I hope the trains leaves on time.)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Non mi piace che mi\u00a0raccontino<\/span> bugie.
\n(I don’t like the fact that they\u00a0lie\u00a0to me.)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

It is generally used in the second part of a sentence, often after “che”.
\nOccasionally it is used in the principle part of a sentence.<\/p>\n

Examples:<\/p>\n

Siate<\/span> gentili!
\n(Be\u00a0kind!)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Prego, mi dica<\/span>\u2026
\n(Go ahead, tell me.)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

It is formed by adding various endings to the root of the verb.
\nThe\u00a0present subjunctive form<\/strong>\u00a0of regular verbs and some common irregular verbs:<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n

che io ami<\/strong><\/span>

– The first person plural<\/strong> of the present subjunctive form is the same as the first person plural of the present indicative form<\/strong>:<\/span><\/p>\n

Noi andiamo<\/span> via.
\n(We’re leaving.)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Luca crede che noi andiamo<\/span> via.
\n(Luca thinks that we’re leaving.)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

– We can often omit “che”<\/strong> when we use the subjunctive form. (pensare, credere, supporre, temere, sperare, dubitare):<\/p>\n

Penso sia<\/span> un\u2019ottima idea
\n(I think it’s a good idea.)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Temo sia<\/span> gi\u00e0 partito
\n(I’m afraid he’s already left.)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Speriamo sia<\/span> puntuale!
\n(Let’s hope he’s on time!)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

– When there is certainty we use the present indicative<\/strong> and not the present subjunctive after “che”:<\/p>\n

So che Giovanni \u00e8 partito<\/span>.
\n(I know Giovanni’s left.)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Because in this case a real fact is indicated – Giovanni has left – which the speaker wants to affirm with certainty.<\/p>\n

3)\u00a0Expressing an opinion<\/h3>\n

There are various ways in which we can express an opinion:<\/p>\n
