Italian Imperfect Tense

This tense is used to indicate:

• a continuous action in the past

Examples:

Il telefono squillava ininterrottamente.
(The telephone was ringing all the time.)

Due anni fa andavo in palestra ogni tre giorni.
(Two years ago I went to the gym every three days.)

Prendevamo il treno ogni mattina alle 6:00.
(We took the train every morning at 6 am.)

or

• a past action which happened at the same time as another 

Examples:

Quand’ero piccolo andavo allo stadio ogni domenica.
(When I was young I used to go to the match every Sunday.)

Mentre Giorgio studiava, Fabio guardava la tv.
(While Giorgio was studying, Fabio was watching the television.)

Mentre la professoressa spiegava i ragazzi chiacchieravano.
(While the teacher was teaching, the children were chatting.)

The imperfect forms of the verbs mangiare, credere and partire:

Mangiare	Credere	Partire
io mangiavo tu mangiavi lui/lei/Lei mangiava noi mangiavamo voi mangiavate loro/Loro mangiavano	io credevo tu credevi lui/lei/Lei credeva noi credevamo voi credevate loro/Loro credevano	io partivo tu partivi lui/lei/Lei partiva noi partivamo voi partivate loro/Loro partivano

The imperfect forms of the verbs essere and avere:

Essere	Avere
io ero tu eri lui/lei/Lei era noi eravamo voi eravate loro/Loro erano	io avevo tu avevi lui/lei/Lei aveva noi avevamo voi avevate loro/Loro avevano
