Li or lì, la or là?
They have the same written form but have two different functions.
Li without accent is the plural masculine pronoun used with the direct object function:
Li ho visti insieme al ristorante.
La professoressa mi ha dato due libri. Devo leggerli entrambi.
Ho comprato i biglietti per il concerto ma non li ho mai ricevuti.
Lì with the accent instead is an adverb of place used to indicate a place far from the speaker and the listener:
La tua borsa è lì, vicino al tavolo.
Non voglio andare lì!
Quel signore lì è mio zio.
The same rule is valid for la and là.
La without accent indicates:
- the feminine singular definite article;
- the musical note;
- the feminine singular pronoun with function of direct object.
1. Ho comprato la macchina dei miei sogni.
2. La sesta nota musicale è la.
3. Maria non è a casa, la trovi al bar.
Là with the accent is an adverb of place that indicates a place far from the speaker and the listener:
La mia amica inglese sta pensando di tornare a vivere là.
Se non trovi il tuo libro, prova a cercarlo là.
Là è dove ho visto Marco per la prima volta.
