Unit 16 – In the park

1) Listen to the following dialogue:

AL PARCO (In the park)

Giorgia: Come si sta bene qui! Questo parco mi ricorda la mia infanzia, ogni estate passavo il pomeriggio nel parco vicino a casa mia.
Veronica: Io invece ogni estate andavo a casa degli zii, al mare, e stavo con i miei cugini.
Manuela: Dove andavi al mare?
Veronica: In Sicilia. Mi divertivo sempre moltissimo.
Manuela: A me d’estate piaceva stare al fresco e disegnare. Ad essere sincera, poi, mi mancava la scuola.

2) Imperfect Tense.

We use the imperfect tense (l’imperfetto) to talk about something we did often in the past.

Examples:

Mangiavo spesso questi biscottini quando ero un bambino.
(I often ate these biscuits when I was a boy.)

Giocavamo insieme.
(We used to play together.)

Imperfect form of some common verbs:

ESSERE (to be) Io ero Tu eri Lui/Lei era Noi eravamo Voi eravate Loro erano

FARE (to do) Io facevo Tu facevi Lui/Lei faceva Noi facevamo Voi facevate Loro facevano

ABITARE (to live) Io abitavo Tu abitavi Lui/Lei abitava Noi abitavamo Voi abitavate Loro abitavano

AVERE (to have) Io avevo Tu avevi Lui/Lei aveva Noi avevamo Voi avevate Loro avevano

DORMIRE (to sleep) Io dormivo Tu dormivi Lui/Lei dormiva Noi dormivamo Voi dormivate Loro dormivano

Italian Imperfect Tense

3) appena (just), già (already), non… ancora (not yet), ancora (yet).

Appena is used to refer to something which happened just before.

Ho appena finito di studiare.
(I have just finished studying.)

È appena arrivato.
(He’s just arrived.)

Già refers to omething which has already happened.

È già andato via.
(She’s already gone.)

Hai già fatto i compiti?
(Have you already finished your homework?)

Non… ancora / ancora refers to something which is expected but hasn’t happened yet.

Non è ancora arrivato.
(She hasn’t arrived yet.)

Devo ancora leggerlo.
(I still have to read it.)

4) Qualche (Some and any)

Qualche means some or any and is invariable. The noun that follows is always in the singular form.

Qualche nuvola. (= Some clouds)
Qualche cane. (= Some dogs)
