Lesson 11 – Viva Sant’Efisio!

1) Listen to the following dialogue:

VIVA SANT’EFISIO!

Alice: Ah peccato! Se avessi prenotato prima saremmo andati sul palco della festa di Sant’Efisio
Laura: La festa di Sant’Efisio e quando la fanno?
Alice: Il primo Maggio a Cagliari, ma in passato penso la facessero un po’ prima.
Laura: Ma sul serio?
Alice: Oltre ad essere tra le più antiche, è anche la più lunga processione religiosa italiana, 65 km percorsi a piedi in 4 giorni!!
Laura: Davvero!!
Alice: Un tempo credo venissero un po’ da tutta la Sardegna, percorrendo strade a volte anche un po’ pericolose!! Con questa processione si festeggia Sant’Efisio, che liberò dalla peste nel 1600 la città di Cagliari e l’isola intera.

2) Imperfect subjunctive (Congiuntivo imperfetto).

Mangiare (che) io mangiassi (che) tu mangiassi (che) lui/ lei mangiasse (che) noi mangiassimo (che) voi mangiaste (che) loro mangiassero

Vendere (che) io vendessi (che) tu vendessi (che) lui/lei vendesse (che) noi vendessimo (che) voi vendeste (che) loro vendessero

Sentire (che) io sentissi (che) tu sentissi (che) lui/lei sentisse (che) noi sentissimo (che) voi sentiste (che) loro sentissero

The Italian Subjunctive (Congiuntivo) Subjunctive is used mainly in two cases..

3) Uses.

Study these sentences and try to understand when we use the imperfect subjunctive:

Pensavo che Fabio fosse in ritardo.

Expressing ideas, beliefs in situations not in the present

Speravo che tu potessi venire alla festa.

Expressing desires, moods in non-present situations

Volevo che tu venissi con me

Expressing will in situations not in the present
