Is it written e or ed, a or ad?
In Italian the conjunction “e” and the simple preposition “a” in some cases take the final “d” and become “ed” and “ad“.
Ed and ad are used only when the following word begins with the same vowel.
Gli ho detto di studiare ed esercitarsi meglio per l’esame.
Ho aiutato Marco ad aggiustare il suo computer.
Sono andata ad ascoltare il concerto del mio cantante preferito ed è stato emozionante.
This “d” it is called D euphonic because it serves to produce a beautiful sound. In fact, the word derives from the Greek euphonia which means “harmonic sound”.
If, on the other hand, the following vowel is different, the euphonious D is not added.
Ieri io e Andrea siamo andati a mangiare la pizza.
I cittadini sono chiamati a eleggere il nuovo presidente.
Warning: there are some exceptions to the rule.
Esistono in italiano alcune espressioni nelle quali si usano ed e ad nonostante siano seguita da una vocale diversa: ad esempio; tu/lui/lei ed io; fino ad ora; ad eccezione; dare ad intendere.
Another exception is represented by those words where the initial vowel is followed by the consonants d and t. In these cases ed or ad are never used, even when the following word begins with the same vowel.
