You write “un altro” and “un’altra”
A common mistake in Italian, which creates great confusion, is the use of the apostrophe with the indefinite articles “un” and “una”.
Un is the masculine singular indefinite article that is used in front of all words that begin with a vowel and is never apostrophized.
For this reason the correct form is un altro, detached and without the apostrophe.
Oggi la giornata è nuvolosa. Andremo al mare un altro giorno.
L’insegnante lo ha avvertito: un altro errore e la verifica è annullata.
Ho comprato un altro paio di occhiali. Gli altri si erano rotti.
Conversely, una is the feminine singular indefinite article that loses the final “a” and takes the apostrophe when followed by a word starting with a vowel.
The correct form is un’altra.
Oggi il cinema è chiuso. Ci andremo un’altra volta.
Vorrei avere un’altra casa dove trascorrere la vacanze estive.
Questa è un’altra questione.
To avoid making a mistake, a general rule can be applied: in the presence of an indefinite article, the apostrophe is used only when the following word is of feminine gender.
The same rule also applies to the expressions qualcun altro and qualcun’altra.
Oggi non ti posso accompagnare a lavoro. Chiedi a qualcun altro.
Io e Maria andiamo al cinema stasera. Qualcun’altra di voi vuole venire?
