Lezione 9 – Una canzone sarda

1) Listen to the following dialogue:

UNA CANZONE SARDA

Laura: Oggi ho sentito una canzone in sardo. Non ho capito tutto, ma era una melodia bellissima e parlava d’amore.
Alice: Ti ricordi il titolo?
Laura: “No potho reposare”, mi sembra. È una canzone molto antica?
Alice: No, penso che l’autore, Salvatore Sini, l’abbia composta nella prima metà del Novecento.
Laura: Davvero? E sai se ha scritto anche altre cose?
Alice: Credo che abbia scritto anche qualche romanzo, ma non sono sicura. Certamente ha scritto la risposta a “No potho reposare” che è una lettera d’amore scritta da un uomo ad una donna, ma la risposta non è diventata famosa e penso che nessuno l’abbia mai musicata. “No potho reposare”, invece, penso che sia una delle canzoni sarde più popolari in Sardegna e in Italia.

The Italian Subjunctive (Congiuntivo) Subjunctive is used mainly in two cases…

3) The past subjunctive.

We use the past subjunctive in the same cases in which we use the present subjunctive (with opinion verbs, sentiment verbs, impersonal forms, will verbs; with some subordinant conjunctions), but with a different temporal concordance.

Penso che Patrizia Valduga scriva poesie.

The action of the secondary phrase “scriva” is contemporary with the action of the main phrase“penso” at the present. This is why we conjugated “scrivere” to the present subjunctive.

Penso che Salvatore Sini abbia scritto No potho reposare nella prima metà del Novecento.

The action of the secondary phrase “abbia scritto”is preceding, that is, the action of the main phrase“penso”to the present. This is why we conjugated “scrivere” to the past subjunctive.
